Baby Activity Guide for Under 1.5 Years Old - How to Prevent Future Musculoskeletal Problems

The growth and development period of puppies is critical for the healthy development of their musculoskeletal and skeletal systems. To avoid the development of deformities and other musculoskeletal problems, it is important for puppies to avoid certain types of movement, motions, and activities. This intensive developmental phase lasts until approximately one and a half years of age, making this period critically important for establishing long-term health.

In this article, we will professionally outline which activities should be avoided for puppies to ensure their healthy development.

Jumping and leaping from heights: The hidden dangers

While puppies love to jump and play, jumping and leaping from heights place significant stress on their joints, spine, and bones. At this age, their joints and bones are not yet fully developed, and such movements put increased pressure on them, which can lead to long-term injuries or deformities.

Intense running: Even energetic little quadrupeds need limits

Although puppies are full of energy, intense running can also strain their joints. Fast-paced movement, especially on hard surfaces, increases joint stress and the risk of micro-injuries. It is recommended to incorporate shorter, controlled walks and play sessions instead. If you plan to engage in running as a shared sport, wait until your puppy is at least 1 year old before beginning training.

Sudden changes of direction

Sudden changes of direction and quick sprints are particularly dangerous for growing dogs, as these movements place significant strain on the knee and the joints between the pastern and paw. Ligaments responsible for joint stability can also be injured during such movements, leading to long-term problems.

Stair climbing: The enemy of healthy growth

Stair climbing should also be avoided for puppies. Climbing stairs and jumping down stairs strains the spine and joints. It is important not only to minimize the frequency of stair climbing during puppyhood, but also to recognize that this type of movement is not natural for dogs and puts excessive strain on the joints, leading to spinal injuries.

Carrying heavy objects: Important to choose appropriate retrieving toys

Early retrieving training can be very useful, however, it is important to choose an object of appropriate size and weight for the puppy for this purpose. Puppies should not be encouraged to retrieve heavy objects. Heavy weights place excessive strain on the joints, spine, and cervical vertebrae, which can lead to growth abnormalities and injuries.

Monotonous movement

Monotonous movements, such as walking the same route too frequently, do not encourage the proper development of puppies' muscles and joints. It is important to provide them with a variety of movement forms and terrains so that all muscle groups develop evenly.

Activities of excessive duration:

Activities of long duration, such as long walks or runs, can overload puppies' musculoskeletal systems. For puppies, it is important that the amount and intensity of daily exercise increase gradually and are not overly strenuous. It is also important to mention the number of kilometers covered in addition to the duration. Do not embark on long excursions with puppies, even if they seem full of energy. During this period, prioritize short but stimulating activities, and ensure there is enough time for rest and sleep between them.

Tug-of-war games

Tug-of-war games are favorites for puppies with a prey drive, but they can be dangerous for puppies if not used properly. These games can put excessive pressure on the joints and teeth. It is important to play this type of game in moderation and carefully: do not pull too hard, do not let go suddenly, play on a surface where the puppy can brace itself and do not let it slip, and do not raise the toy above its head height, as cervical vertebrae can be injured.

+1 Special tip

Although we can teach our dogs countless spectacular tricks throughout their lives, there are some you should wait until they are one and a half years old for. These include the "bunny" or "beg" trick, or even bowing.

A path paved with care to healthy adulthood

For proper development, it is advisable to provide puppies with varied but not overly strenuous forms of movement that promote healthy growth and strengthen the musculoskeletal system, while providing them with a stimulating environment.

By ensuring healthy movement, we can prevent future musculoskeletal problems and help puppies live active, happy lives and grow into healthy adult dogs.

Conscious movement development in puppyhood is very useful; if you are interested in the topic, at least to establish a foundation, consult a musculoskeletal expert or canine physiotherapist, and do not forget about internal support.
