Conditioning for dogs: How can your dog become fitter, stronger, and more resilient?

A dog's fitness isn't just about muscle mass: a fit, well-conditioned dog has a balanced overall system and can adapt better to physical exertion, whether it's sports activities, long hikes, or just an active, movement-rich life. But how is fitness built up, and how can we consciously help our dog with it?

What does fitness mean? Components of fitness

  1. Endurance (aerobic capacity):
Endurance is the body's ability to produce energy for longer periods at moderate intensity using oxygen. This component relies on the efficient functioning of the cardiovascular system and lungs, as well as adequate oxygen supply to the muscles. Developing endurance is crucial for sustained, moderate-intensity movements, such as longer walks or runs.

  2. Strength and muscle mass (anaerobic capacity):
Muscle strength refers to short, intense bursts of effort where energy production occurs without oxygen (anaerobically). Developing muscle mass and strength is important primarily for short, explosive movements, jumps, or quick changes of direction. These abilities help the dog move more powerfully, faster, and more efficiently.

  3. Coordination:
Coordination refers to the cooperation of muscles and the nervous system, which allows for precise, coordinated movements. A dog with good coordination can maintain its balance, overcome obstacles, and perform efficient movements during sports activities or everyday movement.

  4. Flexibility and agility:
Flexibility refers to the range of motion of joints, which is essential for preventing injuries and maintaining natural movements. Good flexibility helps the dog avoid stiffness and allows them to move in various body positions.

Cardiovascular endurance vs. muscular fitness

It is important to distinguish between cardiovascular endurance and muscular fitness, as they affect different physiological systems and can be developed in different ways:

Cardiovascular endurance: This includes the efficiency of the heart, lungs, and circulatory system, which ensure oxygen supply to the muscles and removal of carbon dioxide. A dog with good cardiovascular fitness can sustain movement for longer periods, tires less easily, and recovers faster.

Muscular fitness: This encompasses the strength, endurance, flexibility, and speed of the muscles. The condition of the muscles determines how much force the dog can exert, how they control their movements, and how quickly they can adapt to repeated stress.

The combined development of both components is necessary for building and maintaining overall fitness, especially for sports or working dogs, but it is also essential for maintaining the health of pets.

A dog in good condition:

  • does not tire easily,
  • does not get injured easily,
  • copes better with heat stress,
  • recovers faster,
  • and learns and performs more effectively in sports or daily life.

How quickly is fitness built?

Building fitness does not happen overnight. The body needs time to adapt to new loads. Starting from an average condition, the first measurable changes appear after about 4-6 weeks of regular, gradual loading, and stable, lasting fitness is built up over months of persistent work.

How does development work? The role of supercompensation

One of the key concepts in fitness development is supercompensation. This means that after a workout, the body not only recovers to its original state but rises to a slightly higher level, as if preparing for the next load.

In practice, this looks like this:

  1. Training: physical exertion, which involves muscle work, endurance, or neural activity.
  2. Recovery: rest, active walking, stretching, massage, sleep, proper nutrition.
  3. Supercompensation: the body "overcompensates" slightly – it develops.

Development will be optimal if the next training session occurs precisely in this supercompensated phase. If we train again too soon, the body has not yet recovered, meaning overtraining occurs. If too late, the body returns to its starting level, and the desired development does not take place.

What aids fitness building?

  • Gradual progression: gradually increased load.
  • Variety: combine endurance, strength, and coordination exercises.
  • Adequate rest time: at least 1-2 days between more intensive workouts.
  • Recovery techniques: stretching, massage, gentle movement, supplements.
  • Proper diet and supplementation: amino acids, vitamins, joint protectors, connective tissue supporting supplements.

What hinders progress?

  • Excessive or one-sided loading (e.g., only running, every day)
  • Lack of recovery
  • Musculoskeletal problems, hidden injuries
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Mental exhaustion, stress

What other tools can support fitness building?

Role of movement therapy

Movement therapy, be it physiotherapy or hydrotherapy, is an excellent complement to fitness building. Physiotherapy uses targeted exercises, stretches, and massage to help muscles recover, reduce stiffness, improve joint mobility, and restore ideal movement patterns.

Hydrotherapy, or underwater treadmill, is also an excellent option because water unloads the joints while muscles work effectively. This allows the dog's endurance and muscle strength to develop in a safe environment.

Support from dietary supplements

Dietary supplements also play an important role in fitness building. Vitaltier Sport & Activity and Muscle & Tendon products support the health of sporty, active dogs with targeted active ingredients.

  • Sport & Activity: This complex formula is packed with valuable amino acids that greatly aid muscle building and recovery.

  • Muscle & Tendon: Specifically developed to support the proper functioning of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints, with innovative ingredients such as silicic acid, glucosamine, and MSM.

These products complement training and movement therapy, thus contributing to your dog being in the best possible condition.

Closing thought

Building fitness in dogs is a long-term, conscious process. Never view it as a sprint; it's much more of a marathon. The foundation of progress is properly structured loading, active recovery, and the owner's attention. If you keep all this in mind, your dog will not only be fitter but also happier and more balanced – and the two of you can enjoy an active, healthy life together for a long time.
